Prior to considering an abortion or encouraging someone else to have one, get your facts straight. You have the right to know what type of abortion you will have and what this surgery or procedure will involve. In America we have the right to be informed about things that might affect our health. Women should not go through any kind of surgery, or take powerful drugs that induce abortion, without being informed about potentially serious side effects. Here is some clear and factual information about the most common induced abortions taken from some recent medical texts and journals. First lets define "abortion." Abortion ~ the expulsion of a fetus (Latin for "young one" or offspring") before it is able to survive, esp. if induced on purpose. 2 Most abortions are done for non- medical reasons. In some cases a woman feels she is not ready for a baby. Sometimes, her partner wants her to have an abortion. In other cases a woman may choose abortion because she is concerned about what others may think of her. In many cases abortion is chosen for a mixture of these reasons. Abortion is usually an "elective" surgery rather than one that is medically necessary. Approximately 93% of all induced abortions are done for elective, non-medical reasons such as the ones mentioned above. 3 Surgical abortions are usually not performed before seven weeks, or 49 days LMP (last menstrual period). 4By that time, the baby has identifiable arms and legs (day 45) 5, displays measurable brain waves (about 40 days) 6 and its heart is beating (day 21). The majority of abortions are performed during the seventh through the tenth weeks, 7 when fingers and genitals appear and the child's face is recognizably human. 8 BACK |
